Deciding where to stay is really going to shape your whole trip. You need to pick a spot that matches your vibe.
Midtown Manhattan
This is where ALL the holiday magic happens. I stayed here for my first time, and it was a game-changer.
Everything was a 10-minute walk max! I’m talking Rockefeller Center, Bryant Park, those insane Macy’s shop windows, everything.
If it’s your first time and you wanna be right in the middle of everything festive, this is it.
Plus, hello! Radio City Music Hall is right there, along with Times Square, if you’re into that whole bright lights thing.
Upper West Side
After dealing with crowds all day, this neighbourhood is the calm you’ll want.
It’s much more laidback, very residential, but you’re still really close to Central Park (perfect for those snowy horse-drawn carriage rides) and Lincoln Center.
Upper East Side
If you’re feeling a bit more boujee and upscale, this is your place!
You’re perfectly situated for the Plaza Hotel (yes, the one in Home Alone 2 and Eloise), The Met, and strolling down 5th Ave having your Gossip Girl moment.
Brooklyn (DUMBO or Williamsburg)
For my trendy girls who live for that artsy, cool-girl aesthetic, Brooklyn’s calling your name.
You’ll be close to the legendary Dyker Heights Christmas lights. You’ll soon learn it’s a whole new level of holiday spirit!
It’s also the place to hit up for amazing cafes, like Sey Coffee.
Holiday Highlights You Cannot Miss
These are the “I can’t believe I’m here!” Spots throughout the city that you’re not going to want to miss out on.
Rockefeller Center Tree & Ice Rink
Look, it’s super touristy, but who cares? Seeing that massive Christmas tree all lit up while people are skating below is iconic!
Grab a coffee from the cutest Ralph’s coffee cart to keep you warm while you people-watch because this is what New York at Christmastime is all about.
Pro tip: If you wanna avoid the worst crowds for skate rental, go really early or after dinner (This is what I’d pick. I mean, come on, skating under the lit tree? Yes, please)
Bryant Park Winter Village
This is one of my personal faves. It’s the perfect mix of holiday market stalls, fun decorations, and too many snack options.
I spent so much time on my trip coming back and browsing all the handmade goodies, eating, and drinking way too much apple cider.
And, it was a great place to find local souvenirs and Christmas gifts!
Macy’s at Herald Square Holiday Windows & Santaland
A classic must-see for a reason! The window displays are so detailed that they tell their own stories, and that’s only the outside.
When I realized that everywhere was just as decorated inside, I immediately FaceTimed my mum. Because she needed to see the winter displays in real-time, too.
Saks Fifth Avenue Light Show & Department Store Windows
Let me tell you, the light show on the Saks building? Absolutely jaw-droppingly stunning.
And while you’re there, besides actually going in to shop for limited edition ornaments, you HAVE to check out all the other famous department store windows too.
Bergdorf’s displays are literal art installations!
Columbus Circle Holiday Market
Nestled at the corner of Central Park, this market is giving major European Christmas vibes. The artisan stuff here is insane, and don’t even get me started on the roasted nuts.
I bought like three bags, and I still crave them.
Dyker Heights Christmas Lights
This neighbourhood in Brooklyn does not play when it comes to holiday decorations.
Grab some peppermint lattes to be in the spirit and spend an evening wandering around.
Imagine someone setting up an entire animated Santa band for their decorations. It’s wild!
I highly suggest making sure you have a full battery, because your camera roll’s gonna be full.

Time to get fancy and treat yourself to some serious holiday magic.
Radio City Christmas Spectacular
When I tell you the SECOND I realized the Rockettes were doing their Christmas Spectacular while I was in New York, I was online booking tickets.
This show at Radio City Music Hall is, in my opinion, the iconic New York Christmas show. The kicks, the costumes, the holiday cheer. Really, the whole production will have you obsessed.
The Nutcracker Ballet at Lincoln Center
If you’re wanting something a bit more elegant and dreamy, this is your move.
New York City Ballet brings everything ballet should be! The music, the dancing, those gorgeous costumes, pure elegance. It fully gives sophisticated holiday Upper East Side Girl vibes.
Off-the-Beaten-Path Holiday Magic
Wanna feel like you discovered something special that most tourists totally miss? These spots have their own kind of magic of the season that’ll make you feel like such an insider.
The Met’s Christmas Tree
Now, I know the Met is a popular tourist stop, but did you know they decorated, too? I didn’t!
I walked into the Medieval Art Hall and BAM! A gorgeous seasonal tree front and centre!
I literally did a tiny happy dance when I found it. It was way less crowded than the outdoor trees, so taking pictures was so much easier.
High Line & Chelsea Market
Bundle up and take a winter stroll on the High Line. The views with all the holiday lights below? Beautiful. The art installations along the walk? Amazing.
Warm up in Chelsea Market and try all the foods from the vendors. I loved the donuts!
New York Public Library
Beyond being gorgeous (like, seriously gorgeous), the NYPL will have special holiday displays, including a first edition copy of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol.
It’s this peaceful little escape when you need a breather from all the craziness.
American Museum of Natural History’s Origami Tree
This one’s quirky in the best way, and I think you’ll enjoy it too!
Head to the Futter Gallery, where you’ll see a whole tree covered in hundreds of origami figures. It’s so unexpectedly cool.
Heads up, they actually change the theme for the tree, and a group will create new origami figures for it.

Central Park in Winter
Wollman Rink is the place for ice skating without the crowds! Cheaper too!
With the iconic skyline in the background, it’s like you’re in a little snow globe.
Even if you don’t skate, just wandering through the winter wonderland watching everyone while sipping hot cocoa is a whole mood.
Top of the Rock
The views from here are so, so, so good! You get both Central Park and the Empire State Building in your shots.
It’s the perfect way to take in the whole of New York City at Christmastime.
Grand Central Terminal
Not just a train station, girl. This place is an architectural masterpiece, and they often have a holiday fair right inside.

Clothing & Comfort
Layers are everything in December. Cute thermal underneath, adorable sweater, stylish coat on top.
And please, please, PLEASE wear something comfy on your feet!
I know those shoes are cute, but your feet will literally hate you after day one (mine did). There’s nothing festive about limping through Times Square.
When to Go
Decorations start going up right after in late November, but the real holiday spirit kicks in early December through New Year’s. Weekdays are your best friend, they’re way less insane than weekends.
Budget
Save up for the big stuff, or get a City Pass (it’s a lot at once but you save for your whole trip!)
