This post shares a soft travel guide for gentle ways that solo female travellers can explore without stress or burnout.

You know that feeling when you come back from vacation more exhausted than when you left?

Same! You spend weeks planning, chaotically try to see everything, strictly stick to the itinerary (otherwise you miss something), and somehow end up needing a vacation from your vacation.

But here’s what I’ve figured out! There’s this whole other way to explore the world, and honestly? It’s changed everything about how I want to travel, so I’m going to share it with you.

My soft travel guide will show you exactly how to make it work. Keep reading to discover how to transform your next trip

What Is Soft Travel?

Soft travel is all about bringing a cozy sweater vibe to your entire trip. Instead of cramming your days with every single thing social media tells you to see, you choose what you want to do in the moment.

The philosophy is simple: Your comfort and intuition come first!

Now, don’t confuse it with slow travel; they’re like cousins. Slow travel is about staying in one place longer to enjoy everything about it, but soft travel? It’s about your mindset in approaching your adventure.

There isn’t a time limit; it can be for a weekend getaway in your own city or a month abroad.

Imagine waking up in a new city and asking yourself, “What sounds good today?” instead of checking your colour-coded itinerary.

Maybe you spend a couple of hours in one café because it’s the perfect spot for people watching. Or decide to wander along the streets because the architecture is so spectacular.

It’s giving you permission to embrace your adventure and to travel like a human being instead of collecting attraction tickets.

That’s what this soft travel guide is all about!

Gentle reminder: Just because you’re taking your time exploring and enjoying the moment doesn’t mean your camera roll won’t be filled with memories!

Why This Approach Is Perfect for Solo Female Travellers

As women travelling alone, we already have enough to think about, right? Safety, logistics, and making sure we don’t look lost with a map in the middle of a busy street.

Soft travel removes so much of that kind of pressure. You have control of everything!

It allows for real connections to happen, too. I’ve had some of my best travel conversations because I wasn’t continuously on the move to the next stop.

That chat with a fellow traveller in London? Only happened because I gave myself permission to have a slow start to my morning at the hostel. We ended up getting brunch together before splitting up!

There’s no fear of missing out or people-pleasing, with this way of travelling!

Want to spend your evening reading in your cute Airbnb instead of hitting the nightlife scene? Do it. Want to revisit that art gallery from yesterday? Go for it. This is your trip, not Instagram’s.

How to Embrace Soft Travel: The Practical Stuff

Okay, so this all sounds nice in theory, but how do you actually do it? Here are my tried-and-tested soft travel tips for beginners.

1. Pack To Be Truly Comfortable

Stop packing for the person you think you’ll be on vacation. You know what I mean. Packing all those different outfits that aren’t truly you, and you avoid the items at all costs? We’ve all done it.

Opt to pack cute yet comfortable fabrics, neutral colours, and layers, like a capsule wardrobe. And don’t forget to bring that favourite sweater that makes you feel like yourself.

The non-negotiables for your bag: a good journal and pen (trust me on this), herbal tea bags for cozy evenings, and download whatever book is calling to you right now.

You can find all of my favourite soft travel essentials for solo travel and more here.

2. Follow Your Personal Curiosity

This is where it gets revolutionary: you don’t have to do anything you don’t want to do!

Why not try something different from everyone else, like:

  • Having a proper long lunch at that café with the cute outdoor seating.
  • Picnicking in a park with local cheese and wine.
  • Finding a small museum and really looking at the art.
  • Sitting somewhere pretty and people watching.

The goal isn’t to see everything. It’s to enjoy what you’re seeing.

3. Find Accommodations That Feel Like Home (But Better)

Skip the giant hotel chains if you can. Look for places with personality, kitchen access for slow mornings, and those little details that make you smile. A balcony, a reading corner, and good natural light are bonuses. You want somewhere that makes you want to linger.

4. Make Getting There Part of the Fun

Book train tickets instead of planes and choose scenic routes. The journey can be as much of an adventure as the destination.

Some of my favourite travel memories are from train windows and ferry rides, where I could just watch the world go by.

Soft Travel Destinations to Inspire You

You don’t need two weeks in Bali to embrace the coziness of travel. Here are some ideas that work for different budgets and timeframes:

A Countryside Retreat in Japan

Plan a trip where you wake up in a traditional ryokan with a garden right outside, soak in an onsen, and wander bamboo forests. Time moves differently here, and so will you.

Bookstore Café Weekends in London

Get lost in an independent bookshop that’s been around for over a hundred years, and enjoy the many cozy cafés with mismatched chairs. Perfect city energy without feeling overwhelmed.

Scenic Train Ride Through the Scottish Highlands or the Swiss Alps

Sink into your window seat with a treat and a coffee in hand, then watch breathtaking landscapes pass by. Daydream while the views help you relax even more.

A Cozy Cabin in the Canadian Rockies

Choose a Log cabin, a crackling fireplace, a glass of wine, gentle hiking around the lakes, and that book you’ve been meaning to read. It’s like hitting reset when you enter the real world again.
